WEN WEI WANG
CHOREOGRAPHER, SWAN
Wen Wei Wang began dancing professionally in China in 1978. In 1991, he came to Canada and danced with the Judith Marcuse Dance Company, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and Ballet British Columbia. He received the Clifford E. Lee Choreographic Award, the Rio Tinto Alcan, and the Isadora Award for Choreography.
Under his direction, Wen Wei Dance has toured across Canada, presenting works at Vancouver International Dance Festival, Dancing on the Edge Festival, the Canada Dance Festival, and the International Contemporary Dance Festival in Columbia, South America. Wen Wei Dance has performed at the Venice Biennale Festival in Italy, and at the Beijing National Performing Arts Centre and The Shanghai Grand Theatre with China’s Beijing Modern Dance Company.
Wen Wei has choreographed eleven full-length works for Wen Wei Dance. He has also choreographed for Ballet BC, Alberta Ballet, Ballet Jorgen, Northwest Dance Project in Portland, Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal, Arts Umbrella, and SFU. He has choreographed the dance sections for Vancouver Opera and San Francisco Opera, for Nixon in China.
He received the 2013 RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Award. In 2017, he worked with the National Performing Arts Centre of China theatre company for Hamlet. A co-production between ADARTE Company Italy and Wen Wei Dance was performed at Public Dance 2023 International Contemporary Dance Festival, in Poggibonsi, Tuscany, Italy.
Wen Wei was the Artistic Director of Ballet Edmonton from 2018 to 2024.
