MARGARET GRENIER

Executive and Artistic Director, Dancers Of Damelahamid

Margaret Grenier is Gitxsan and Cree and is the Executive and Artistic Director for the Dancers of Damelahamid and producer of the annual Coastal Dance Festival. Margaret’s full length dance works include Spirit and Tradition (2010), presented at Vancouver’s 2010 Cultural Olympiad, the 2010 World Expo in China, Festival de Danzas in Peru (2011), V11 internacional de danza folklorica in Ecuador (2014), the Pan Am Games in Toronto (2015), the National Arts Centre’s Dancing the Land (2021), Expo 2020 Dubai (2021) and Jacob’s Pillow (2024).

Margaret’s multimedia choreographic works bridge Gitxsan and Cree dance forms with current expressions, contributing to a redefining of contemporary Indigenous dance. Flicker (2016) premiered at The Cultch and toured La danse sur les routes du Québec (2017), Montréal, arts interculturels and Danse Danse (2017), Dance Victoria (2018), DanceWorks Toronto (2018) and DanceWest Network (2018). Mînowin (2019) was a co-production of the National Arts Centre’s National Creation Fund, the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, The CanDance Creation Fund, Dance Victoria’s Chrystal Dance Prize and premiered at the Mòshkamo Festival at the NAC, toured the CanDance Network, the 2019 Festival Internacional Cervantino Mexico, DanceWest Network 2022, and 2023 Kia Mau Festival, NZ. Raven Mother (2024) was a co-production of the NAC’s National Creation Fund, the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, The CanDance Creation Fund, premiered at The Cultch with a national tour through the The CanDance Network.

Margaret holds a MA at Simon Fraser University and a B.Sc. from McGill University. She has worked as a sessional instructor at Simon Fraser University (2007) as faculty at Banff Centre's Indigenous Dance (2013). She received the Reveal Award (2017), the Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing Arts (2020), DSA Distinction in Dance Award (2022), and the Isadora Award (2024).
